An interest of mine that I don’t really ever talk about with anyone is fashion. I enjoy all subtle details in a garment. Interesting materials. The kind of stuff that’s made to last. I appreciate minute attention to detail that the designer put into their art. It wasn’t always like this though. For a large part of my childhood I wore mostly plain solid color block t-shirts and jeans. I never wanted any patterns or graphics. I was pretty timid and wanted to do whatever I could to draw attention away from me. Wearing a shirt with a logo or text felt unexplainably weird to me.
Eventually, I started to let patterns and subtle designs in. Band t-shirts and button down shirts. I took a chance on a pair of raw denim before I went to study in Germany in my junior year of college and that started my journey to look for better quality clothes. It is just something my younger self never could have imagined that I would be interested in. Some of the styles I’ve found that I like are military surplus and workwear, but I’m not boxed into those styles. It feels good to be intentional when choosing what to wear, even if it’s one of those days where nobody sees it but me. Lately I’ve been enjoying trying out more visually interesting pieces and bolder material choices.
